Tyne Tunnels go cashless

7 Oct, 2021

Major changes are happening at Tyne Tunnels – another chapter in the rich history of how people cross the River Tyne.

In this article we will tell you about the change to a cashless crossing and what you need to do.

Tyne Tunnels go cashless

TT2 asked us as the eyes and ears of the park to pass on the following information including how you can pay for your crossing. They said:

‘We have some major changes coming to our service in November that will see the removal of the barriers at the Tunnels and cash payments.

Cash payments will no longer be accepted at the Tyne Tunnels in November. We are transitioning to Open Road Tolling meaning you can drive straight through without stopping! This will allow for faster journey times and reduced congestion.”

Payment

You can

  • pre-pay for your journey and save 10% (sign up for free in minutes here: http://apply.tt2.co.uk/),or

Tyne Tunnels – a key transport link

TTS say that ‘“We have 50,000 vehicles travel through our Tunnels daily, we are key transport link for the North East helping commuters, local businesses, and friends and family to connect.”

Therefore, the Tyne Tunnels are a vital part of our region’s life, both commercially and domestically. Being able to cross the Tyne has always been vital to the economy of our region. The manner in which the crossings have changed and developed have reflected and contributed to the changes in our region’s industrial heritage and way of life.
